Statement of Qualifications:

Must be able to work well in teams, understand and respect confidentiality and meet deadlines.  Must be capable of effectively and efficiently managing multiple priorities, tight timelines, stressful situations and communicating complex information in a plain language format.

A positive attitude, receptivity to direction, respectful approach towards management and co-workers, maturity and a high level of self-motivation are essential.  Commitment, confidentiality, organizational loyalty and professionalism are essential.

  • Professional accounting designation (CA, CMA, CGA, CPA), and University degree in Accounting, finance or related field
  • Minimum 3 – 5 years of progressive accounting experience including full cycle accounting, financial statement prep, financial reporting and analysis
  • Experience with not for profit organizations considered an asset
  • Strong teamwork and leadership skills
  • Excellent organizational skills

The accountant will manage the finances of the MNU while maintaining the confidentiality of the organization, staff and member information.  The incumbent will perform the following:

  • Works with the MNU Executive Secretary-Treasurer
  • Plan and prepare the annual budget
  • Perform monthly reconciliations of all Balance Sheet accounts
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, monitoring trends and reasonability of accounts and investigate deviations from expected results
  • Assist with maintenance and implementation of internal controls, policies and procedures
  • Demonstrate ability and aptitude for recognizing, investigating and analyzing problems, and developing solutions.
  • Monitor and manage cash flow, ensuring that surplus cash is invested appropriately
  • Monitor investment portfolio to ensure compliance with SIPP and prepare continuity schedule for gains and losses
  • Provide monthly reports to Directors on financial activities in their areas of responsibility
  • Prepare the working paper file in preparation for the annual MNU external audit and act as point person with external auditors
  • Responsible for all payroll functions, including staff and member
  • Provide direction and guidance to accounting administrative staff as required to ensure dues revenue rebates, member expenses and time-off are correctly administered
  • Upon request, review worksite, regional and local records for compliance with not for profit rules and MNU policy
  • Provide education to local and worksite Presidents and Secretary Treasurers as requested and in cooperation with the Education and Professional Practice Officer
