Dear member,

Attached you will find an update that Bill 29 Commissioner Bob Pruden asked us to share with you. The letter offers some information and answers to potential questions about pending representation votes as a result of the amalgamation of collective bargaining units in Manitoba’s health care sector.

Please note that MNU continues to lobby the Commissioner to exempt nurses from Bill 29’s requirement for representation votes in the nursing sector. This is a needless exercise, as MNU already represents approximately 97 per cent of all unionized nurses in the province. But under this legislation, just one nurse represented by another union would trigger a vote for thousands more across an entire region. It’s simply unreasonable, and causes unnecessary distraction.

Votes are not expected until 2019, and campaigning has not yet begun in the nursing sector. However, given the circumstances, MNU is actively preparing for possible campaigns in every region.

We are counting on you to vote for the Manitoba Nurses Union not just because MNU is best suited to advocate for the unique needs of nurses, but also because we want to send a strong message to government that nurses are united. We will continue to speak out forcefully against cuts and changes that make it harder for us to provide the safe, quality care our patients deserve.

MNU will continue to share information related to Bill 29 as soon as it becomes available. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your local/worksite president or labour relations officer.

In solidarity,

Darlene Jackson
President
