Every year, MNU recognizes those members who have exemplified the spirit of the Yellow Ribbon. The ribbon emerged in the 1990s as a symbol throughout Manitoba of our willingness to stand together and to support each other.

More information on the Yellow Ribbon criteria and application process can be found on our MNU website

In July of 2022, MNU Past President Vera Chernecki passed away. Vera was President of the Manitoba Organization of Nurses Associations (MONA) and then MNU from 1981 to 1999. She led our union during a very transformative era, from MONA to MNU, including the historic 30-day strike in 1991. After her retirement, she was also Parliamentarian at our Annual General Meetings.

In her honour, the Vera Chernecki Emerging Leaders Award was established, and the first recipient was announced at the 2023 MNU AGM in Brandon. This Award is meant to pay tribute to a very special person in MNU’s history and foster the spirit of unwavering dedication to activism.

Details on the criteria and application process can be found on our Vera Chernecki Award page

The deadline for both awards is March 31 and the recipients will be announced at our MNU AGM on May 7 and 8 at The Fairmont.
