MNU president Sandi Mowat was part of the CFNU delegation which recently hosted and participated in a round table discussion, comprised of more than 40 Canadian health experts and professionals, about priorities and strategies for negotiating the new Canada Health Accord.

The CFNU has specific recommendations for a new agreement. A new Health Accord must:

  • Improve and extend the position of the federal government in funding Medicare;
  • Provide opportunities for improvements within a publicly funded and delivered system;
  • Make investments in home care and long-term care; and
  • Establish a national, universal Pharmacare plan.

The Canada Health Accord is an agreement between the provinces, territories and federal government which provides the provinces with stable funding and sets national standards. The 2004 Health Accord expired on March 31, 2014.
