MNU President Sandi Mowat joined healthcare leaders from across the province on Monday to celebrate 40 years of home care. To commemorate this milestone, the province announced that each year, Manitoba will recognize the week of September 8 – 14 as Home Care Week.

The Manitoba Home Care Program was the first comprehensive, universal provincial home-care service in the country. This week we thank the MNU home care nurses across the province making a daily difference in the lives of Manitobans like Rosanne Coma.
Coma is a resident of Cowan, Manitoba, who spoke tearfully about the compassion and care that the home care nurses from the Swan River Home Care Program have shown her, and the difference that they have made in her life.

“Receiving home care was a real blessing for me.  My home-care workers showed real compassion for me,” said Coma.  “They not only helped with my health issues, but also connected me with a local dietician who has helped me lose more than 70 pounds and provided other suggestions that have really improved my health.  I am so grateful to them for their help.  I feel I am back to living my life.”

The province also announced a new home-care pilot program operating in west Winnipeg is underway, testing a new model for enhanced care in partnership with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and All Seniors Care. This pilot is aimed at making some changes that will provide more on-site assessments and case co-ordination, meaning staff can better respond to changing patient needs.

“We want to congratulate our MNU home care nurses on 40 years of home care in our province,” said MNU President, Sandi Mowat. “We want to celebrate this milestone with you and thank you for your commitment to excellence in patient care.”
