MNU president Sandi Mowat has been raising awareness about the prevalence of PTSD in the nursing profession.
Until now, nurses and PTSD is a subject that has received very little attention, however nationwide studies reveal that more than 30 per cent of nurses may be dealing with symptoms of PTSD.
Many cases of PTSD go unreported or are un-recognized mainly due to the social stigma associated with mental health as well as the strenuous efforts nurses make in upholding society’s perception of them as care providers.
Recently, she spoke to Emergency Room nurses about PTSD and the work that MNU is doing through education and awareness campaigns, lobbying of government and working with employers to ensure that nurses have timely access to appropriate mental health supports.
